Alonso: « The next three races are vital »

Fernando Alonso believes that the next three Grand Prix in Spain, Monaco, and Turkey will be decisive in determining whether Renault can position itself in the title race after a poor start to the season.

The Spaniard and his team have scored only five points in the first four races. The R29 is simply not fast enough to be at the top of the standings at this point.

Alonso explains that the planned updates for the next three events will determine the rest of the season.

« I think the next three races will be very important. Spain, Monaco, and Turkey, » said Alonso, who finished in eighth position at the Bahrain Grand Prix last Sunday.

« I believe that the majority of the teams will bring new parts for the next three races. »

For some, it will be in Barcelona, others in Monaco, and for two teams, it will be in Turkey.

« In June, we will be able to see who can fight for the championship, who can fight for the podium, and who is completely out of the running, » continued the 2005 and 2006 world champion.

The Renault driver also stated that Brawn GP and Red Bull, the two teams that have won races since the beginning of the year, both have the necessary resources to stay ahead despite not being supported by a major manufacturer.

« Sometimes, we call them the small teams, but they are not that small. Brawn GP and Red Bull have the means to succeed, perhaps even more than Renault. »

« We must be aware of it. It is a very frustrating situation for Renault and Mercedes who, by continuing to develop their engines, spend money and then ‘give’ them to Brawn GP and Red Bull who are fighting for the championship win. »
