When Nick Heidfeld finished the Spanish Grand Prix, the fifth round of the 2009 championship, he crossed his 25th consecutive finish line. By doing so, the BMW driver broke the record held by his compatriot, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
As the cherry on the cake, Heidfeld celebrated his 32nd birthday during this racing weekend.
This record of 25 races without retirement not only showcases the driver’s performance qualities but also the strength and reliability of the team’s cars.
The last time Nick Heidfeld did not cross the finish line of a race was at the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix, when a technical problem forced him to stop at the side of the Fuji Speedway with only two laps remaining.
Since then, Robert Kubica’s teammate has seen the checkered flag at the end of the 2007 season, throughout the entire 2008 championship, and at every race at the start of 2009.
« I would like to say a big thank you to the BMW-Sauber team for the stability of the car, which obviously plays a major role in this record, » acknowledged Heidfeld.
