From next season, it should be easier to become an F1 team thanks to new regulations. GP2 teams, a category below F1, are therefore showing a particular interest. This is the case today with Racing Engineering, owned by Spanish businessman Alfonso de Orleans. He is keen to enter the premier category of motorsport in 2011.
Racing Engineering won the title in GP2 last season with Giorgio Pantano. The Spanish team, which is based near Jerez, is eager to enter Formula 1 in 2011.
« We do not think that most teams are ready for the 2010 season; we are aiming for 2011. I hope there will be a slot for us at that time. There are interesting projects, and we are looking for the best alternative for our team. »
« Only teams like Lola and Prodrive could be on the grid in 2010. I think the others are struggling to manage operations. Some of these teams could bring GP2 teams into F1, but there is a lot of work to do to show a semblance of performance, » said Alfonso de Orleans.
Racing Engineering could also lose its place in the sport if the grid already has 13 teams in 2010: « We will see. But even if there’s a spot on the grid next year, all the teams will be there for the following season. Furthermore, there is still no precise rule on budget caps, » he added.
The team will most likely try to enter the sport with its own team, even if the option of a takeover by a big team remains on the table: « We will consider all options, but today, we already have 90% of what is needed to run an F1 team, we don’t think that being purchased by another team is the best option. »
