Report: A Brawn double with a special flavor

The Brawn GP team did it. Winning an atypical or urban Grand Prix. It’s the team’s fifth victory in six races. All records should be broken because after this Monaco Grand Prix, Brawn GP will be the 2009 world champion team. Who can doubt it today? Meanwhile, Jenson Button is also getting closer to the title with now 51 points on the table. He wins this Monaco race once again in front of his teammate, Rubens Barrichello.

The Brazilian could do nothing to catch the Englishman and now knows that he is the team’s No. 2 driver and that things will probably not change…

Jenson Button – 1st:

Wow! Winning the Monaco Grand Prix is something you dream about when you’re a child and when you’re a racing driver. Winning in Monaco is truly a special feeling. With Rubens [Barrichello], we achieved a fantastic one-two finish. The race was fabulous with the constant stress of seeing the barriers getting closer and closer. But for the last laps, I relaxed a bit, trying to enjoy the moment.

«It’s an incredible day that ends with an impromptu sprint in front of the stands. I can tell you it’s very long! It’s amazing to receive such a welcome from the crowd. The car was perfect today. I thank the team, Mercedes-Benz, and my family who are here in Monaco. Looking at this weekend’s race, it is the highlight of an already exceptional season. »

Rubens Barrichello – 2nd:

« Another double for the team today, more than incredible. I had a very good start with a great tire choice that allowed me to get ahead of Kimi before the first corner. I had a good pace, even though the aerodynamic balance of my car wasn’t perfect and I suffered from graining. We had an excellent strategy to recover the lost time due to these issues and I was able to maintain second place. It was a great race, and I really enjoyed the distant battle with Kimi Räikkönen. »

Ross Brawn – Team Principal:

« Fantastic performances by Jenson and Rubens. Our Mercedes-Benz engine allowed us to achieve an incredible victory in Monaco today. Jenson gave himself the best chances of victory after securing the pole position yesterday. He was calm and ensured the victory like a true champion. »

Rubens made an excellent start to get ahead of Räikkönen. He had an excellent pace with his first set of tires. Unfortunately, graining compromised his chances to fight close to his teammate. But he managed to keep Räikkönen at bay to bring in the maximum points for the championship. The Monaco Grand Prix is a very special race and winning here means so much to everyone.
