BMW-Sauber director Mario Theissen explains that the difficult situation of his team in recent races has not weakened his confidence in achieving good results this season.
Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld once again had a deplorable weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix. The F1.09 lacked grip and downforce, exacerbated by problems in achieving good tire temperature.
But following this disastrous weekend, Theissen hopes that the improvements planned for Turkey, including a double diffuser as well as the return of KERS, will bring a new lease of life.
“We will have an improvement on the car in Turkey, it should be better suited to this track,” explains Theissen. “For now, it’s tough.”
« It is the first setback after three years of success, and it is somewhat unexpected, so it’s difficult. But the engineers are able to turn it into motivation. »
Asked by the magazine Autosport about a BMW-Sauber comeback later in the season, Theissen stated: « Yes, absolutely. That’s positive thinking. I say that our team can do it, it has done so in the past, and it is very eager to regain the place we had. »
The German thinks that the weekend’s difficulties can be attributed to the tires, somewhat like Toyota.
« Yes. Absolutely. We believe that the issues were focused on these elements. We had confirmation of this during the race after qualifying, » he explained.
