Turkish GP: Alonso: « Primordial to score points in every race. »

Fernando Alonso has been consistent for several races by finishing in the points. He acknowledges himself that his team, Renault, is currently unable to do better than 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th place. He hopes, just like last year, to make a remarkable return to the forefront at the end of the season.

For now, the Spaniard arrives in Turkey filled with hope on a circuit he is fond of. His consistency is apparent in the standings as he is 7th, just behind the Brawn, Red Bull, and Toyota drivers who have been the stars at the start of the season.

Fernando, you scored two points in Monaco. Tell us about your race…

« It was difficult. Monaco is always a mentally exhausting race. Starting from 9th place on the grid made things even more complicated because, even with a good race strategy, we only managed to gain two places and the track traffic didn’t work in our favor. The two points scored were perhaps the best possible result that day, even though I was comfortable in the car and its performance improved throughout the race. It is crucial for us to keep scoring points at each race because every point will be important at the end of the season. »

The next race takes place in Turkey, at Istanbul Park. Is it a track that you enjoy?

« Yes, absolutely. It’s a circuit where I enjoy driving and it offers good overtaking opportunities, especially in turn 12, at the end of the straight that leads us to the last complex of slow corners. This track features fast zones and very distinctive turns like the long left turn, number 8. It’s one of the most impressive turns of the season! One of the main challenges at Istanbul Park is finding the right balance to have a competitive car in both the fast and slower zones. »

Are you satisfied with the progress made so far by the R29?

« It is certain that we still need to take another step forward. We will have new developments in the coming weeks and that should help us, but I do not expect to be at the front of the pack in Turkey. However, I still believe that, just like last year, we will be able to fight for podiums and victories later in the season. We are well aware that it will not be easy, but the entire team remains extremely motivated and determined. »
