The name Brabham has joined the already long list of teams registered for entry into Formula 1 in 2010. The new project has no connection with the Brabham team and its founder Sir Jack Brabham or his family.
It is led by the German businessman Franz Hilmer, co-owner of an F3 Euroseries team. This new team will be based in the former Super-Aguri factory in Leafield, Great Britain. The former technical director of the Japanese team, Mark Preston, has joined Brabham alongside Hilmer and the financial and commercial director, Hans-Joachim Tritschler.
According to a statement released Thursday: Brabham is pleased to announce its application for the Formula 1 World Championship thanks to the cost cap implemented by the FIA in 2010. We appreciate this regulation point to allow new teams to enter the sport at a limited cost. We are convinced that this budget cap was a necessity for the World Championship. We would be happy to enter Formula 1 and take on this challenge with the new rules.
After acquiring the assets of Super-Aguri, Hilmer will bring in Formtech to design the team’s cars. On the financial side, he claims to have secured 75% of the necessary financial support for the 2010-2012 period.
While the Brabham family has no connection with this new team, the team participated in F1 races between the 1960s and 1992, before retiring from the sport mid-season. Over these three decades, Brabham secured two titles, 35 victories, 39 pole positions, and 41 fastest laps in races.
The list of teams admitted for the 2010 championship will be published by the FIA on June 12.
