Adrian Campos celebrated a very special day yesterday, Friday, as his team was selected by the International Automobile Federation to participate in the Formula 1 championship in 2010.
The Spaniard, a former Grand Prix driver, will lead this team alongside Jose Ramon Carabante. The headquarters are located in Madrid, while the technical base is in Valencia.
The team will use a chassis designed by the Italian manufacturer Dallara and a Cosworth engine.
Campos stated that his goals for the first season will be modest.
« It is a very special day, » he declared at a press conference in Madrid. « We will be on the grid with a lot of dignity. »
« I have been in sports for 30 years. It’s what I’ve done my whole life. Six years ago, we tried to enter F1, but when I spoke with Ecclestone, he said: ‘To the bin’. However, now he has given me his full support, and I want to thank him and Max Mosley. »
He added: « I don’t think about winning races, but being in the top ten and generating revenue. Now is the time to work and think about all the details. »
As for the co-founder of Team USF1, Peter Windsor, he feels honored by the FIA’s decision to grant him a spot on the 2010 grids.
This team has been working hard for years to enter Formula 1. Windsor recognizes today the fruit of its efforts in achieving this goal.
« This sport has taken an important place in my life over the past fifty years. Seeing the team’s name on the list of those selected by the FIA is a lesson in humility. I know it may sound a bit pretentious, but that’s how I feel. I have devoted a lot of time to it, it’s a very big day for me. »
Windsor added in an interview for BBC Radio 5 Live that his team will decide quickly on the names of future drivers: « We have a list of drivers. We have already assessed young Americans. There are some very good ones. We will make a decision on this shortly. »
« Our ambition is first to prove that we can design and build a car in the United States, rather than in Europe, » he explained.
« I think that in the context of the discussions we are having right now, we have resources for three or four years. »
