A true event in this 2009 season for McLaren, the team’s national Grand Prix in Great Britain. The Woking team will be eager to roll up their sleeves and work even harder at the dawn of this weekend’s start. Because there is work to be done! Its recent races have been synonymous with poor performances. Of course, there will be new parts, but the major updates are expected for the next GP in Germany. The fervor of its supporters might drive McLaren to surpass itself.
Same for Lewis Hamilton, a true hero in his country who will try to regain some of his former glory on the Silverstone circuit, but the task looks difficult with the presence of another Englishman, Jenson Button, the undisputed leader in 2009. Finally, Heikki Kovalainen will try to repeat his feat from last year by perhaps securing a second British pole position! Hope keeps us alive…
Lewis Hamilton – Racing Driver:
« The two greatest things about racing at Silverstone are the fans and the track itself. It’s great to see and meet people from all over the country and the world who have come to Silverstone for the Grand Prix. When I’m in the car, I can see the fans around the circuit waving banners with messages of encouragement. It’s as if these fans are racing with me in every lap! Driving on this track is incredible too. I love Silverstone, it’s an amazing circuit. Copse and Becketts are absolutely fantastic. They can showcase the full power and grip of a Formula 1 car. It’s a perfect place for racing, so let’s hope it’s not the last time we come to this track. »
Heikki Kovalainen – Racing Driver:
« Silverstone is a fantastic circuit! I achieved my first pole position in Formula 1 right here last year, and I remember how much you have to push the car to its limits. I love this fast layout. We know that this year, it won’t be the same because our car won’t be at its best. The challenge for the race driver is to attack up to the limit of what’s possible. After a few disappointing races, a return to the points for the team’s home Grand Prix would be fantastic. »
Martin Whitmarsh – Team Principal:
This race has proven to be very fruitful for us in the past. We have won the British Grand Prix 14 times with 12 of those victories on the Silverstone circuit. The most recent one, of course, was by Lewis [Hamilton] last year in the rain, which was fantastic. He’s one of the greatest drivers in wet conditions. For this year, we are coming to England after a challenging race in Turkey. We are determined to do better in front of our home crowd.
