Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, will be on track today for the first practice in Great Britain without the KERS. His team, McLaren, wants to conduct tests on its advantages and disadvantages.
The very high speed of the Silverstone circuit and the lack of braking zones make the KERS less advantageous this weekend compared to other tracks.
This is why only Heikki Kovalainen will have the device on his MP4/24 this Friday. The team will then make a decision on its plans for the rest of the weekend.
« I will race with it but Lewis [Hamilton] won’t have it, » confirmed Kovalainen. « I don’t think it affects the balance of the car. I want to use the KERS unlike Lewis and we’ll see what happens next. »
For this first day of British testing, there will only be three cars equipped with the kinetic energy recovery system: Lewis Hamilton’s MP4/24 and the two Ferraris of Massa and Räikkönen.
