The director of the Donington Park circuit, Simon Gillett revealed that the redevelopment work on the track will begin on August 1st with the aim of being included in the Formula 1 calendar in 2010. The British race is usually held at the end of June or early July.
Gillett signed the final legal documents last week, giving him the green light to start the track redevelopment work. He explained that Donington Park was just waiting for the last two events to take place before bringing bulldozers to the site. These events are the Superbike and the MotoGP Grand Prix.
Gillett also dismissed any concerns about the project’s funding, adding that the entire necessary budget will be available by the end of July before work begins.
« It was an exceptional workload, » said Gillett. « It was difficult, but the team was fantastic. We have a clear vision for the future, and the support has been tremendous. »
« The work will be done during the winter, but we are confident. We hoped to start a little earlier, but as I said we had a problem with our source of funding. »
« We will settle our funds by the end of July and then we will start planting the first forks on the first day of August! »
