Nick Heidfeld admitted to having several options for the next season. Struggling in 2009 and despite holding a current contract with BMW, the German driver did not hide his interest in several teams for the continuation of his career.
Nicknamed ‘Quick Nick’, he is in his tenth season in the sport. Still searching for his first victory, he speaks candidly about his options: « The main focus is on the current situation with the team, » he explained to Eurosport. « But in the medium and long term, you are constantly in discussions and deliberations. »
BMW has consistently improved since 2006, but this year the trend has reversed abruptly. Heidfeld is the first to think that all possibilities must be considered: « We must stay in the sights of several teams, not just BMW. But just because this season is difficult doesn’t mean I’m going to leave the team. We have accomplished a lot and I am convinced that BMW is destined to win races. »
Can the German find his way back to the podiums with victories in sight? « It’s a bit difficult to predict, » he replied. « My goal is to become world champion, and if that happens at forty, that will be fine. If you look at the last few years, the drivers who retired were around 38 or 39 years old. I’m now 32, so I still have a few years ahead of me! »
Heidfeld also briefly spoke about the current politics of the sport and, like Mark Webber or Felipe Massa before him, he believes that ticket prices for races should be reduced to meet the demand of fans.
