Fernando Alonso denied all rumors about his future in red, at Ferrari. These rumors claimed that the Spaniard, currently with Renault, would be transferred to Ferrari as early as 2010. After Ferrari’s denials a few days ago, it is now the Iberian driver’s turn to put an end to the rumors.
Launched two weeks ago by the Spanish and Italian print newspapers, the rumor of Alonso leaving for Ferrari as early as 2010 had stirred the Formula 1 microcosm. Ultimately, both parties denied it. When asked about it, Fernando Alonso responds: « No, and no! »
« These are rumors, I believe they’ve been the same for 4 or 5 years! »
Rumors were circulating about a possible departure of Kimi Räikkönen from Ferrari to continue his career in WRC and drive in the Rally category. He would then have been replaced by the double Spanish world champion.
The Iberian also stated to the press, Thursday in Germany, that he has no contact with Ferrari. He nevertheless admits that having a competitive car is an important factor for a driver’s choice of team: « It’s important for the car to be competitive, but it’s not the end of the world if it’s not… »
« Of course, I miss winning, I would like to be able to drive a fast single-seater as soon as possible. But I also know that F1 is a sport, and like any sport, there are ups and downs. »
« It’s like that in Tennis, in the NBA, in Football. Sometimes you’re on top, later you have to question yourself. In motorsport, it’s even more important because performance depends on the athlete, but also on the equipment. »
« Look at Michael [Schumacher], he may be the best driver of all time. He won two titles with Benetton, then had to wait 5 years before winning with Ferrari. So I consider myself at that stage of my career and I’m preparing to be the best when my car allows me to. »
Currently, neither Renault nor Ferrari can compete for the driver or constructor titles. Fernando Alonso is in ninth place among the drivers with 11 points, 10 less than the 5th place driver.
