The president of the Australian Grand Prix, Ron Walker, stated that uncertainty about the future of Formula 1 could lead to the withdrawal of the race from Melbourne.
The disagreements between the FIA and FOTA have been reignited following a meeting of the technical working group. Walker stated that the ongoing possibility of a split in the F1 championship is a major concern for the organizers of the Australian GP.
« If the war continues, Melbourne will seriously reassess its position on whether or not to continue with Formula 1, » he told the Australian newspaper The Age.
« Without Ferrari in Melbourne, the race will lose much of its charm and, consequently, the government’s investment will be called into question.
Walker believes that the problems can only be resolved if Max Mosley resigns from the presidency of the FIA at the end of his term. He hinted that he could be re-elected if FIA clubs feel that the governing body has been attacked by the car manufacturers who are part of FOTA.
« From my point of view, Mr. Mosley should withdraw from the sport with dignity rather than slowly killing Formula 1, » Walker added.
« Sport needs fresh blood to usher in a new era of motor racing. Bernie Ecclestone tried to be a peacemaker, but if car manufacturers worldwide do not agree on the rules set by the FIA, then it will be the end of the organization. »
