Friday: Brawn GP has temperature issues

Brawn GP started today in Germany its ninth Grand Prix of the season (and of its history) leading the constructors’ championship. The team has every chance of remaining so at the end of the race, but currently, the problems encountered by the team are only due to the cold.

In Nurburg, it’s cool. No more than 15°C in the afternoon, with wind… The BGP001 doesn’t like this, and neither Button nor Barrichello manage to set the best times today. Barrichello is even struggling with difficulties. He does no better than 7th place.

The Brawn GP drivers will also have to make up for the time lost due to the rain last night by changing and finding the best setup for qualifying. The rain disrupted the day by as much as 40 minutes. Nevertheless, the team’s program remains well advanced.

Jenson Button – 2nd and 3rd:

« We had an average day, but we managed to set up the car properly. We are still lacking performance in certain areas, but we are going to work on it and overall it’s a good start to the weekend. »

« The main issue remains the cool conditions. We have the same temperatures as when we do winter testing, and here, the hard tires are not easy to heat up properly… »

Rubens Barrichello – 12th and 7th:

« It’s going to be a cool weekend, it seems. Nevertheless, the tires seem to behave differently than at Silverstone. The hard tires are of course difficult to get up to temperature and keep in the right range, but the soft tires are more effective, which is encouraging. We made some good progress this afternoon, but we still need to find some front grip. »

Ross Brawn – Director:

We made good progress today by using data from previous Grand Prix in cool conditions. However, these conditions continue to make life difficult for us. We need to work overnight to find ways to improve and have the best package for tomorrow.

« The weather forecasts show a slight improvement for tomorrow. Let’s hope that with some work, we can be well positioned in the qualifications tomorrow afternoon. »
