Brawn GP did not arrive in Germany as favorites, despite their status as championship leaders. The team faced weather conditions that were very unfavorable to the English team. It’s cold in Germany and the BGP doesn’t like that. Yet, the team managed to deliver another great performance.
Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button are in the top 3, second and third respectively and will be on the lookout for any mistake from poleman Mark Webber to recover the victory in tomorrow’s race. Button will also have the heavy task of protecting the team against Vettel’s attacks, on home turf and in pursuit, starting 4th. The team is satisfied, and the hopes and desires are very high.
Rubens Barrichello – 14th and 2nd:
I loved this qualifying session. It was super close and exciting, and being able to start from second place and the front row tomorrow will be really interesting for me. I felt that the track was dry enough for slicks in Q2. I then said over the radio that I was coming in to change tires, but I didn’t get their response. Fortunately, when I was in my box, the tires were ready!
« It was the right decision and it allowed me to approach Q3 in a calmer manner. Tomorrow, the race will be tough. We will need to be on the lookout for any mistake and take advantage of any benefit. I’m looking forward to it. »
Jenson Button – 11th and 3rd:
« Simply the fact of having reached Q3 was a relief for me today, and I am all the more happy as I qualify third. The session was insane, particularly Q2, and I think we all enjoyed it today. »
« I thought the track was too wet for slicks, but Rubens [Barrichello] did it, and I was able to change my tires just in time to qualify for Q3. The race is going to be interesting, with forecasts mixing wet and dry conditions. The car is a bit better than yesterday, but I still need heat to warm up my tires. We need a bit of luck.
Congratulations to Mark Webber for his first pole. Believe me, we will do everything we can in the race tomorrow to ensure that he does not secure his first victory.
Ross Brawn – Director:
« The weather put on quite a show today, giving everyone a challenging qualification. I am even more delighted to have our two drivers in second and third positions on the grid. »
They were great today. Rubens [Barrichello] had a very good instinct to change tires early, while Button resisted the pressure at the end of Q2 on slicks as the rain started to fall again.
« The team did a great job and congratulations to Webber for his first pole and to Mercedes-Benz. They have 5 engines placed in the first seven spots… »
