The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Bulgaria is about to become a reality, organizers said on Saturday.
They met with the Formula 1 financial chief, Bernie Ecclestone, in Germany to continue discussions on a potential contract. The executives left the meeting feeling confident.
« We are very satisfied with the progress of the negotiations with Bernie Ecclestone, » declared the head of the Bulgarian organizing committee, Rumen Petkov to the news agency Reuters.
« We have never been this close to reaching our goal. We have attended almost all the meetings, and now we are waiting for Mr. Ecclestone, who is expected to visit the site in Bulgaria in the coming weeks. »
« It is quite possible that we will sign the contract with Mr. Ecclestone during the visit, but we are waiting. »
Petkov stated that the circuit, which was originally supposed to be built in the city of Pleven, will ultimately be near one of the major cities in Bulgaria.
This will be near one of the three largest cities in Bulgaria, the capital Sofia, Varna, or Burgas. This is because these cities offer the best facilities in terms of accommodations, while one of our main goals is to extend the tourist season.
« Large-scale accommodation is necessary. This will encourage Bulgarians while the world is severely affected by the economic slowdown, » he concluded.
