Second consecutive double, the third of the season, Red Bull is on track to make a mark like Brawn GP at the start of the season. Unlike other times, it’s Mark Webber who achieves a superb victory against all odds, as he is given a drive-through penalty at the start of the race. Everyone thinks the victory is slipping through his fingers, but the Australian proves more determined than ever. First pole position yesterday, Saturday, and first race victory, it’s a fabulous weekend for Webber.
His teammate Sebastian Vettel did not disappoint as he finishes second with honors. He started 4th and even dropped to 8th place on the first lap. An excellent race strategy allowed him to come back to the forefront. Without a doubt, the Red Bull duo is the most consistent in the F1 field, which suggests further successes.
Mark Webber – 1st:
« It’s an incredible day. I wanted to win after Silverstone. I had a good chance after getting the pole yesterday, I knew I was in a good position to try to win the race today. The only thing I was thinking about was the rain, but it didn’t come. The start wasn’t easy, I lost sight of Rubens [Barrichello]. At first, I thought he was a bit more to the left and I moved to the right, touching him. It’s not my style and I received a drive-through penalty. My engineer calmed me down and I attacked as hard as I could. It was a tough winter, Sebastian showed during the winter testing what the car could do. I had a lot of people around me to get back to the form I had before my injuries. The team was very patient with me as well. I want to thank Dietrich Mateschitz, and everyone at Red Bull Racing for what they’ve done for me over the winter. Not to forget, everyone in Australia. It’s just an incredible day for all the people who have helped me get to where I am today. »
Sebastian Vettel – 2nd:
Congratulations to Mark [Webber], he was unbeatable today. He was faster than all of us, so he deserved to win. I’m very happy with the result. For my part, it was a bad start because I had all the cars with KERS around me with two McLarens and even Felipe [Massa]. I started fourth and found myself eighth or something like that. I then struggled with the soft tires in the first stint and found myself in the middle of traffic. I could have gone faster, but there was no way to overtake Felipe, as he always used the magic button when I was close enough. I was fortunate to be on a good strategy, which gave us second position, but Felipe kept attacking. It was difficult until the end of the race. We had to fight, but it’s another one-two for the team and I’m happy about it. I would be lying if I said I’m very happy with this second place. Of course, I wanted to win, but yesterday, Mark did a better job, and that’s why he deserves the victory today. It’s a great battle between us, and I’m looking forward to the next races.
Christian Horner – Team Principal:
A brilliant performance by the team. A magnificent car that Mark drove perfectly. After all the difficulties he went through over the winter, I am absolutely thrilled for him. He deserves it. Sebastian managed to recover the positions lost at the start and delivered an excellent performance alongside Mark. A new one-two finish puts us back in the running in both championships. It’s an important result for the team, but today all the honors go to Mark Webber, who deserves to be the winner of this race.
