The future of Piquet is increasingly uncertain

The future of Nelson Piquet at Renault remains uncertain as Flavio Briatore stated that he could not confirm the Brazilian’s presence behind the wheel of his car at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Piquet is surrounded by rumors that he might leave the French manufacturer a few days after the German race. He failed to score points, which contractually ensured the split with his team.

Despite Piquet’s confidence over the weekend about his future, Briatore therefore refused to confirm the future of his driver from today.

« I don’t know, » he admitted when asked if Piquet would be alongside Fernando Alonso to drive on the Hungaroring. « It’s possible that I may be in the car myself… »

Piquet wrote via Twitter that Renault had informed him that his R29 would receive future updates. On this matter, it would be on the same level as Alonso’s for the Hungarian race. This clearly implies his presence with Renault.

« The team promised that with Fernando, we will have the same car for the next race. »

Last weekend, Piquet complained in the columns of Autosprint that he was racing under different conditions than his Spanish teammate.

« My contract is complex, with many points of agreement that are only verbal, » added the Brazilian. Renault promised me the same conditions as Alonso, but I never had them. Over the winter, I did 2000 km of testing while Alonso did 4000 km. »

We had a few problems, but it’s bad luck that has struck Renault. I understand Briatore is disappointed, but it’s not just my fault. It’s a tough job; I’m trying to keep a level head without putting too much pressure on myself.

The third driver of the team, the Frenchman Romain Grosjean, has been strongly linked to the racing seat if Piquet were to disappear.

The Brazilian Lucas di Grassi could then take the No. 3 spot, but he clearly indicated on Tuesday that he is fully focused on winning the GP2 crown.
