Felipe Massa successfully underwent surgery for his injuries sustained during his accident in the qualifying session in Hungary.
Ferrari stated that the driver will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit at AEK Hospital in Budapest, where the Brazilian was transported after being hit by a spring during Q2.
His skull bone was affected, and Massa also suffers from a concussion and cuts on the forehead.
Brawn confirmed that the debris belongs to a suspension damper of Rubens Barrichello weighing approximately 800 grams.
« We had a problem at the back of the car, and we are still studying it. The part in question is held by the FIA, and if we get it back, we can understand what happened and then draw conclusions from it, » said team principal Ross Brawn.
« This is the first time we have had a problem with the car. It is very reliable, and we are obviously looking for data to understand what caused the problem. It is difficult to comment at the moment. »
Latest update, Felipe Massa remains in a stable condition as doctors and Ferrari express confidence that there were no complications overnight.
As is usual for this type of operation, Massa was placed in an induced coma and remains under observation in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
According to a statement released by Ferrari this Sunday morning: « After undergoing surgery yesterday afternoon, Felipe Massa is in stable condition and there were no new complications overnight. »
« He underwent another scan today, which will provide more accurate information. »
Some sources claim that the hospital’s doctors are optimistic about Massa’s recovery. It is also too early to judge the recovery time for Massa and his return to Formula 1.
Barrichello went to the hospital last night in Budapest to get information on the health condition of his Brazilian colleague, while Massa’s father, mother, and wife flew from Brazil to the Hungarian capital to join his brother, who was already there.
