Renault team suspended for the European GP

Renault team has been suspended for the next Formula 1 event, which is the European Grand Prix in a month. This sanction follows a racing incident during which Fernando Alonso’s wheel came off. The Spaniard was on the track at that moment during the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring circuit.

Following a discussion after the race with the track officials, it was judged that the team had sufficiently violated the regulations to be suspended for the next event.

This means that Alonso will not be competing in his home Grand Prix in Valencia at the end of August unless he changes teams…

The Ferrari track could indeed intensify with Massa, who will undoubtedly need rest after his terrible accident during yesterday’s qualifying session.

Alonso was leading the Hungarian race until his first pit stop, but his efforts were thwarted as his right front wheel was not fitted correctly. He rejoined the race, but his wheel couldn’t hold and crashed into the barriers.

A statement released by the track marshals on Sunday claims there were several regulatory violations.

The stewards spoke twice to Renault representatives after the race.

According to them, Renault was aware of the fact that no measures were taken to prevent the vehicle from leaving the pits… and failed to inform the driver of this problem or advise him to take appropriate actions under these circumstances, even though the driver contacted the team via radio, believing he was suffering from a puncture.

The team is therefore in violation of article 3.2 of the sporting regulations, and in violation of article 23.1. This sanction might be a bit harsh for the incident in question, but didn’t the FIA penalize Renault to raise awareness after the tragic F2 driver Henry Surtees’ accident and the terrible accident of Felipe Massa?

He was reminded of his right to appeal the decision to Renault.
