It has now been six days since Brazilian Felipe Massa was seriously injured after his accident during the qualifying session of the Hungarian Grand Prix in Formula 1. The Ferrari driver suffered a head trauma coupled with a concussion.

Operated on Saturday night a few hours after his crash at over 190 km/h, Massa is recovering day by day. Placed in an artificial coma for the first two days to prevent brain damage and avoid suffering, Massa can now talk, get up, walk for a few minutes, and see! The main concern was with his left eye. The Ferrari driver was severely affected, suffering from a fracture of the eyebrow ridge. Opened after three days, his left eye was not damaged and he seems to have no lasting effects (nor memories, for that matter) from the accident. As a result, he will be able to leave the hospital next Monday according to the doctors. He will then leave the AEK center in Budapest to go to São Paulo in Brazil.

« Felipe Massa is recovering well and we have decided to return home to Brazil next Monday. » Massa’s personal doctor, Dino Altmann, tells the press. « He will go directly to São Paulo, as he does not need to be taken care of in Paris, » at the FIA institute headed by Gérard Saillant. Professor Saillant notably took care of Mickael Schumacher’s accident 10 years ago when he broke both legs at Silverstone.

« He will need to continue his recovery and will be able to return to the circuits as soon as possible. At least that’s what’s planned. » adds Altmann. « No need for special treatment. He is indeed in very good condition and is very confident. He wants to drive again very soon. »

Indeed, yesterday, Gérard Saillant informed the press of his intention to bring Massa to Paris to complete his treatment. With the FIA’s agreement, Massa will finally be free to head directly to Brazil by private flight.

It’s the Brazilian who validated Ferrari’s decision and Stefano Domenicali’s decision to have him replaced by Michael Schumacher. Massa, now in a stable condition, nevertheless thinks about the race and would like to be present for the European GP in Valencia on August 23rd: « He thinks of only one thing, returning to competition. He thinks he would be able to drive again in Valencia, » commented Altmann a few days ago.

Reacting to his replacement by Michael Schumacher, Massa commented to the press: « We’ll have to see if I would let him drive! »

According to the specialists consulted by Motors Inside, the Brazilian is not expected to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car in a Grand Prix for another two months. He could then start driving for Ferrari again in the last two or three races, including the Brazilian Grand Prix in mid-October.
