Michael Schumacher admits he has not yet looked into the possibility of a return to racing for Ferrari later this season. He spoke today at a press conference in Geneva following his attempted comeback for the European Grand Prix, which takes place in ten days.
The seven-time world champion was forced to abandon his plans for Valencia after experiencing neck pain following tests on the F2007. It is not yet clear if Schumacher would have been fit to race had he had more time to prepare. He has not yet considered the upcoming races at Spa or Monza.
« Speculations in this sector are natural, » said Schumacher. « Many people have their own opinions and thoughts, but the fact is that I am very disappointed not to have achieved what I wanted. »
« You can imagine that I might be very frustrated and sad about the situation. I wasn’t exactly ready, but I’m obviously still available to support the team and everyone. I prepared for my return with the utmost seriousness. We did everything we could on our side, but from the beginning, with Ferrari, we always said that I would do the job only if I was ready for it. It is sad to see that in the end, I cannot fulfill this objective. »
Schumacher added that Luca Badoer was the right man to replace Felipe Massa in the Grand Prix: « Luca is a very good friend. He has been preparing for years because it’s his job. To be ready in case something happens. »
« He is not someone who sits quietly doing nothing. He has always been ready and, naturally, he has worked very hard since Felipe’s accident. We have always said that I needed to confirm my physical condition to be in the race. So it was normal for him to stay in shape as needed. »
« I think he is the best. Certainly, he hasn’t raced for a long time, but a driver does not lose the competitive spirit, and I wish him courage. It’s a difficult thing to do, but if there is indeed one person to do it, it’s Luca, » concluded the German.
