According to Williams’ technical director, Sam Michael, the team continues to work on certain aspects of its KERS system. Only Ferrari and McLaren are still equipped with the kinetic energy recovery system this season. Lewis Hamilton in his MP4/24 secured the first victory with a car equipped with the device last month in Hungary, while Kimi Räikkönen and his F60 took second place.
However, the FOTA, which currently includes eight teams, has agreed not to use the system next year due to the cost of development and their complex nature. Most teams have already completely abandoned the development of the systems.
However, Williams and Force India were expelled earlier this year from the teams’ association during the conflict between FIA and FOTA. A Williams spokesperson recently declared that given the team’s position regarding FOTA, it is not bound by the KERS ban in 2010. Consequently, the Grove team is working on its own device, even if it might not be presented this season.
« We still have a team working on the KERS, but I don’t want to state a launch date, » said Michael. If FOTA maintains its ban and if Force India continues to operate without the system, Williams could therefore be the only team equipped with KERS next season.
