European GP: Badoer (Ferrari) is still sorry for Massa and Schumacher

As he finalizes his preparations for his return to Formula 1 in Valencia this weekend, Luca Badoer feels just as sorry for Michael Schumacher as he does for Felipe Massa. Badoer’s presence in a racing seat at almost 40 is a surprise as he replaces Massa, but he also replaces Michael Schumacher. The German was supposed to be in his place, but a stubborn neck injury prevented him from making his comeback.

Badoer will have thoughts for both Massa and Schumacher when he heads to the track for this European Grand Prix: « I am very motivated to make the most of this opportunity, even though I know I am facing a tough task, particularly during the first few days in Valencia, » the Italian said on Tuesday, after two days of testing in an F60 at Fiorano for promotional purposes.

« These will be difficult practice sessions for me, but I will try my best to achieve a good result. I have to say that my first thoughts when I return to the track go to Felipe [Massa], because I was scared for him during his accident. I am delighted with his recovery and hope he will be back racing as soon as possible. »

« I must add that I am also thinking of Michael [Schumacher], because having been around him in recent weeks, I know how much he was looking forward to this return. He put a tremendous amount of energy into his preparation. Even though his decision gave me the opportunity to race for the Scuderia, I feel sorry for him, because not only are we friends, but I am also one of his admirers. »

Next to this publicity stunt in Fiorano, where he was limited to 100 kilometers of testing per day, Badoer also spent time at the factory with his race engineers over the past few days. The driver will have the heavy task of securing the third place in the Constructors’ Championship for the Scuderia. In an attempt to strengthen his chances of achieving a feat, the F60 will see significant modifications to the front and rear wings as well as the diffuser.
