Alonso indeed signs on his home soil the absolute best time of the day, and is the only one to break the 100-second barrier per lap. His teammate, and newcomer, Romain Grosjean, adapts as best as he can. The French-Swiss was performing well and got a good feel for an F1 car in real Grand Prix conditions. The next step for the former GP2 driver is qualifying.
Fernando Alonso – 6th and 1st:
This first day was good for us. I was able to complete some solid laps and the car seems competitive. I felt comfortable at its wheel since this morning. We mainly worked on the setup today and we are quite satisfied with the balance found. I think the rest of the weekend looks promising. The incident with Nick Heidfeld is, in my opinion, something that can happen in a race or during free practice. For tomorrow, my goal will be to aim for the front row, and then to score points on Sunday.
Romain Grosjean – 17th and 13th:
« The first time in the car, you’re always a bit tense, but the day went pretty well. I did my best and I must say that having Fernando next to me helps enormously. So I’m satisfied with this first day, and the goal for tomorrow will be to continue this progression. »
Pat Symonds – Executive Director of Engineering:
« First of all, we are delighted to be in Valencia and to participate in this race weekend. Next, we welcome Romain [Grosjean] to the team, and I must say that we have been impressed by his progress today. He attacked hard without making any mistakes. Fernando had a positive day. The car is performing well and we are pleased with how we are handling the tires. So this Friday has been positive. »
