The Formula 1 manager, Bernie Ecclestone, warned the organizers of Donington Park that a definitive financing plan must be found by September at the latest. Otherwise, Ecclestone would be forced to refuse the organization of the 2010 British Grand Prix at the circuit, opting to remain at Silverstone instead, or completely removing the event from the calendar.
Since the warning from the Silverstone circuit, which believes it cannot remain without certainties for long regarding its removal from the 2010 calendar, Ecclestone has asked the Donington Park circuit organizers for evidence and a coherent financing plan before the end of September.
If the circuit is still not ready, Silverstone could continue to host the British Grand Prix or could wait until 2011, leaving the UK without a Grand Prix next year.
« They have until the end of September to provide me with bank guarantees. Their contract depends on it, and if it doesn’t work out, ‘Adios Amigos’ » commented Ecclestone to the Sunday Express in Valencia.
« I hope Donington Park will do everything they need to do, and if not, we will basically return to Silverstone.
For its part, a spokesperson for the English circuit confirmed with 100% certainty that they will be able to organize the British Grand Prix next year and that everything is going according to plan. We considered delaying our entry to 2011 due to the crisis, but we will ultimately be ready on time and will put the tickets on sale as soon as we deem the time is right.
