Abu Dhabi has confirmed that its start will be at 5:00 p.m. this year. Formula 1 had informed the television broadcast chiefs of the Belgian Grand Prix that the first event on the Yas Marina circuit would start at 5:00 p.m., two hours later than initially planned. With a sunset at 5:43 p.m. on race day, this means that the Grand Prix will start at dusk and finish under the floodlights at night.
The CEO of the Abu Dhabi circuit, Richard Cregan, stated: Yas Marina Circuit was built from the start to host leisure activities both day and night. Staging the event as a day and night race from the first year gives us the unique opportunity to demonstrate the circuit’s inherent flexibility and its own resources. It has always been our intention to showcase this spectacular site to the world, and this decision just allows for that possibility.
« It’s the best of both worlds, spectators and viewers will see the magnificent architecture of the newest Formula 1 circuit with sunlight and then with artificial light. We hope everyone will be impressed by what they experience. »
Abu Dhabi stated that the floodlights used to illuminate the circuit would be turned on at the start of the event to ensure a smooth transition between light and darkness.
