Friday: Red Bull feels like it’s growing wings at Spa

Red Bull began the first day of the Belgian Grand Prix with the same weather problems as its rival teams: rain. But instead of complaining, the drivers are pleased, and Vettel even considers himself lucky not to have to take the wheel during Free Practice 1. The team needs to recover after its underperformance in Valencia and sees this Friday as a good start.

Mark Webber sets the best time for the team today and expects a tough qualifying session, but he will be up to the challenge. Performances were less impressive today for Sebastian Vettel, but the German needs to conserve his engines, and if he doesn’t want to risk engine failure during the race, he has every reason not to push the ones he has left too hard.

Mark Webber – 17th and 4th:

« I think we did everything we could do today. We always expect to lose time at Spa due to the weather conditions, and that was the case this morning. We were able to have a productive session this afternoon even though we weren’t always going in the right direction. This allowed us to learn and make progress. We are now focused on tomorrow – but it’s not a bad start. »

Sebastian Vettel – 19th and 10th:

« We didn’t have much time on the track today, mainly this morning due to bad weather. But it was actually a good thing. We know we have to face difficult Fridays in the future because of my very high mileage on certain engines. So I was a little lucky to have the rain this morning. »

« In the afternoon, I was comfortable with the single-seater, we had no issues, and I’m satisfied with my performance. We need to wait until tomorrow to know exactly where we stand, but I think the weekend has started very well! I love this circuit. It has superb corners and we have a lot of fun! »
