The Red Bull Racing team has confirmed that it will replace the Renault engine in Mark Webber’s car before the Belgian Grand Prix qualifying. A brand-new unit had been installed on the RB5 this Saturday morning during the third practice session, but an issue was noted at the beginning of the session.
The decision has been made to replace the Renault engine, and the new one will be in place for the rest of the weekend; it will be the seventh engine used out of a total of eight for Webber. Team principal Christian Horner says it is too early to judge whether the issue comes from the terminal or if the problem can be resolved to reuse the unit later this year.
The incident comes a week after Sebastian Vettel’s double engine failure at the European Grand Prix, which forced him to severely limit his testing miles in order to avoid reliability issues.
