The Renault F1 Team and Fernando Alonso gave an extraordinary show to the public in Oviedo (northern Spain) this weekend. The Iberian driver was at the wheel of his Formula One car in the streets of his hometown in front of more than 170,000 fans.
The event took place in the center of Oviedo where a temporary 1.8km track was specially designed for the occasion. Alonso performed a series of demonstrations to the delight of the public. The Spanish driver started the festivities at the wheel of his kart; he then drove a Mégane Sport RS and a Mégane Trophy and, to crown this exceptional day, Alonso completed several laps in his 2008 Renault F1, the R28.
The Roadshow had already visited Seville and Madrid in Spain, but it was the first time Oviedo hosted the event. It was in front of thousands of fans and fellow citizens who traveled to attend this exceptional day that the double world champion put on his show.
Alonso was also honored by Gabino de Lorenzo, the mayor of Oviedo, today. Indeed, he presented Fernando Alonso with the street sign that now bears the name of the double world champion.
At the end of the day, Fernando Alonso commented: « This day has been fantastic and it’s a dream I’ve realized today. I want to thank the government of Oviedo and Renault for making this Roadshow possible, here, at home. The city of Oviedo can be very proud because fewer than twenty cities have had the honor to host a Formula in their streets. An impressive number of fans came to see the event, and that makes me very happy. I hope they enjoyed the day. It was also an opportunity for me to thank all the fans for their loyalty and support. I really wanted to show the people of Oviedo how great a sport Formula One is.
