Italian GP: Discovering KERS for Grosjean at Renault

This will be the third Formula 1 Grand Prix in the career of the young Romain Grosjean. He will be eager to perform better than in the first two races, especially after the somewhat disastrous race in Belgium. But it’s an experience like any other for a debut in the premier category of motorsport.

The Franco-Swiss driver will face a particular challenge, that of using the KERS this weekend at Monza. Indeed, on the long straight stretches of the Italian track, Renault has decided to use its kinetic energy recovery system, a device it has never used before, of course. An opportunity for Romain Grosjean to continue his learning.

Romain, Spa was your second Grand Prix but it was very short…

« Yes, my race was disappointing. I had some issues during the qualifying session and therefore started the race at the back of the grid. The beginning of the race was promising, I had gained five or six places on the first lap. I was fighting to gain more ground when I got involved in an incident at the fifth corner and that ended my race. It was frustrating to retire so early because I need to spend as much time as possible in the car and I really wanted to finish my race at Spa. It’s a track that I really enjoy. »

What do you think of Monza?

« It’s one of the traditional circuits and I can’t wait to be there. I’ve had good results at Monza in the past, so I can focus on the car’s balance, which will have low downforce. We will also have the KERS system this weekend. I’ll need to get used to it during Friday’s free practice. It should give us an advantage, especially at the start of the race. »

Have you set a goal for this Grand Prix weekend?

My goal this weekend is to do better than at Spa. I will therefore need to at least get into Q2, secure a good spot on the grid, and finish the race. For now, I am still learning Formula One and will keep using every opportunity and every lap to improve and help the team. I am also continuing to build a good relationship with my engineers, as this plays a fundamental role in being able to get the most out of the car.
