Singapore GP: Alonso will have to stay awake for Renault’s sake

After a turbulent start to the week with the verdict in the Renault case, it’s time for sports this weekend with the Singapore night Grand Prix. Surely, the French manufacturer arrives somewhat weakened on this circuit as Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds are no longer part of the team and no replacements have been announced yet.

No matter the past, Fernando Alonso knows what he is capable of and arrives with confidence at the Singapore City circuit since he won the race exactly one year ago. According to him, the R29 is now competitive on all tracks and his goal will be a podium finish, at the end of a Grand Prix that will take place under the spotlight!

Fernando, you had a positive weekend in Monza. Tell us about your race…

« Considering the fact that I was eighth on the starting grid, I was happy to finish fifth. This result was better than what we had predicted before the race. We used the KERS system all weekend, but I didn’t manage to optimize it at the start, and we lost a bit of our advantage before the first corner. The car’s balance was good for the rest of the race, and my one-stop strategy worked well, so we were able to score important points. »

The next race takes place in Singapore. What do you think of this circuit?

« It’s a track that I enjoy because it presents some rather interesting challenges. Some sections, like the chicane at turn number 10 where you have to be very quick and use the curbs, are interesting. Overtaking is not easy in Singapore, but the circuit offers certain opportunities. »

How will the R29 behave?

« The R29 performs well on most tracks, so I think we can be quite competitive and aim for the podium. This must be my objective this weekend. »

How do you prepare for unusual driving schedules?

Last year, I decided to stay on European time instead of switching to local time. So I’m going to do the same thing this year; it’s the best solution for my physical preparation.
