Japanese GP: Alonso arrives with a good mindset…

It is a fact that Fernando Alonso, still a Renault driver, arrives at the Suzuka track in Japan in very good spirits. First, he made it to the podium in Singapore a few days ago. A performance given this rather dull 2009 season, and this third place can only boost a driver’s morale.

Secondly, his state of mind in the Land of the Rising Sun may be at its best, as it is during this race weekend that the next step in his career should be finalized. He is indeed set to sign his contract with Ferrari, and in the early hours of Thursday morning, the agreement could be announced. Many say his family will always be Renault, and that’s why he’ll give his all until the end of the season, starting with the Japanese Grand Prix taking place at the end of this week.

Fernando, you secured your first podium of the year in Singapore. What was your state of mind after the race?

« This podium has been wonderful. We fought hard to achieve this result and the team deserves it because we’ve been unlucky this year and have lost quite a few opportunities. Everyone can be very proud of this result. It’s a great reward for the work done this year on the circuit and in the factories of Enstone and Viry. »

We are now heading to Suzuka. Are you excited to return to this track for the first time in three years?

« Yes, I really can’t wait to return to this superb circuit which is one of my favorites. I have very fond memories of Suzuka, where I won the race in 2006: it was a very important result for the team at the time in terms of the championship. I also remember my battle with Michael Schumacher in 2005. For me, it’s unforgettable. The Japanese Grand Prix is probably one of my favorites of the year. The atmosphere is superb, the fans are always very passionate and very respectful. »

Tell us about the technical challenges that this circuit presents…

« I think all drivers appreciate the fast corners of the Suzuka circuit, which is also very technical. It presents a real challenge for the engineers. In terms of setup, the front is very important for direction changes. The rear must be very stable to allow us to tackle high-speed corners. The S-section is very crucial: you have to manage direction changes over a 15-second period, which is very physically demanding. You also have to stay focused at all times, as the slightest mistake can be costly on the stopwatch. »
