Felipe Massa returns to the tracks in Karting

The Brazilian driver Felipe Massa took another step in his rehabilitation on Wednesday when he got behind the wheel of a KART. It’s the first time the Ferrari driver returned to the track since his terrible accident during the qualifying of the Hungarian Grand Prix a few months ago.

Since Saturday, July 25, when he was hit by debris on the head, Felipe Massa had not taken the wheel again. A few days after his accident and after coming out of the artificial coma in which he was placed, Massa was transferred to a special facility in his home country of Brazil. Since then, the 28-year-old driver has been training and undergoing rehabilitation.

After two months of physical activity and visual training to improve his left eye, which was severely affected during the crash, Massa finally decided to drive. Supervised by his personal doctor, Dino Altmann, Massa drove a Kart for about ten laps at Granja Viana.

Despite the rain, Massa will continue to drive today and tomorrow before heading to Ferrari’s test track in Maranello to train on a simulator. Ferrari had already stated they did not expect the Brazilian to return this 2009 season, having been replaced by Badoer and then Fisichella. However, if Massa quickly regains his feel and performance, Stefano Domenicali has hinted that an early return at the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix might be possible.
