The stewards of the Japanese Grand Prix have decided that Nico Rosberg does not deserve any penalty even though the constructors’ championship is at stake. Rosberg and Williams, through their technical director Sam Michael, were summoned by the stewards after the race following allegations by Jenson Button, who claimed that the German set his best time in a sector under the safety car regime. Button believed he could have beaten Rosberg if he had been slower.
A penalty would have given Button’s team the constructors’ title, as they only need 0.5 points to win it. However, his teammate Rubens Barrichello and he might have gained a place. The stewards, however, ruled that Rosberg had done nothing wrong.
« The commissioners met with the drivers and team representatives and reviewed telemetry data, time accounting GPS records, and video evidence. This evidence showed a « fuel » message on the driver’s display board. »
« However, telemetry data shows that the driver, from a safety perspective, had reacted adequately to the yellow flags. In this context, the stewards intend to take no action. »
