Brazil GP: Alonso’s Return to Former Victorious Grounds

As with every end of the season since 2005 and 2006, the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos holds a special significance for Fernando Alonso. This is the first year that this race does not conclude the championship, whereas in 2005 and 2006, for example, the Spaniard secured his titles. This season, Alonso is far from any pressure to win the championship but is perhaps already thinking about next year with Ferrari where he might be in contention for the final victory.

After a disappointing Japanese Grand Prix, the Renault driver is still happy to return to Brazil even though it is quite challenging from a physical and technical standpoint. The enthusiastic crowd will undoubtedly help forget these aspects!

Fernando, after a disappointing weekend in Japan, what is the team’s mindset as they prepare for the Brazilian Grand Prix?

« Even though the result of the race in Suzuka was disappointing, the team remains in a positive mindset. We know the car is fast, unfortunately we were unlucky during the qualifying session. It’s a shame because I think we could have scored points if my position on the starting grid had been different. We know we are fighting with Williams and BMW in the Constructors’ Championship, so every point I can score in the last two races will be very important. »

What race memories do you have from Brazil?

Interlagos will always be very special for me because I won two world championship titles there with Renault. It’s one of the most beautiful races of the season, the fans are passionate about Formula One, and the atmosphere is very unique.

What are the challenges of Interlagos?

The surface is generally very bumpy, so it is necessary to have a car capable of passing over these bumps. The circuit runs counterclockwise, making it very physical for the drivers. Additionally, it features some long left-hand turns that are taxing on the neck muscles. It is not easy to find the perfect car setup because there are fast corners, slow corners, and then a very long straight. The secret to a good lap time is to have an effective aerodynamic package and a car with good mechanical grip for the middle of the lap.
