A violent storm delayed the qualifying session of the Brazilian Grand Prix, at the end of which Fernando Alonso achieved the 10th fastest time and Romain Grosjean the 13th. Previously, the two Renault drivers were quite opportunistic during the free practice 3 as they secured the 4th and 6th fastest times.
During a qualifying session that lasted almost three hours, Alonso managed to secure his ticket for the Superpole in the final minutes. In contrast, Grosjean remains on the sidelines but still outpaces the championship leader and potential future champion, Button. A respectable 13th position…
Fernando Alonso – 4th and 10th:
« I think this is the longest qualifying session I’ve ever participated in! The car didn’t have the potential to allow me to do better, and the conditions made qualifying interesting, especially in Q3, when the track started to dry. For tomorrow, the changing conditions could impact the race, and if you’re in the right configuration at the right time, there’s a way to gain many positions. So we’ll do our best tomorrow. »
Romain Grosjean – 6th and 13th:
« In Q1, it really rained a lot but I was very happy with the car and all the drivers were in the same conditions. So, I performed well. Unfortunately, in Q2, we didn’t have time to fit the intermediate tires on the drying track. I completed the whole session with the same tires. I want to commend the work of the mechanics, who did an exceptional job after my incident this morning. They allowed me to start the session with peace of mind and a brand-new car! »
Bob Bell – Team Principal:
« The extreme weather conditions made this qualifying session very difficult. We were lucky to be able to get into Q2 with Fernando. He didn’t have the speed, as his car didn’t allow him to adopt the right pace. It’s disappointing to finish with the 10th time, but we are in a reasonable position for tomorrow. The forecast calls for rain in the morning, followed by possible showers in the afternoon. Conditions will therefore be changing, like today. »
