The McLaren-Mercedes team has been fined $50,000 by the FIA for not adhering to safety regulations. The team released Kovalainen from the pit while refueling was still in progress.
The Finnish driver then left with the refueler’s hose, which he tore off and spilled enough fuel on the pit lane to ignite the atmosphere as Räikkönen’s Ferrari passed by.
The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), having deemed the incident very serious, fined McLaren, with the money going towards safety in motorsport, while Heikki Kovalainen was penalized with a 25-second addition to his finishing time.
He thus moves from 9th place to 12th, just ahead of Romain Grosjean.
For the record, note that it was the Brawn GP mechanics who helped Kovalainen get back on track.
