Abu Dhabi GP: The time has come for farewells between Alonso and Renault

Seventeenth and final race of the regular Formula 1 season, this Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is also Fernando Alonso’s last race with the Renault team. After his two titles in 2005 and 2006, followed by two more years in 2008 and 2009, the adventure between the Spanish driver and the French team, considered his second family, comes to an end. He will therefore be eager to perform a feat on the Yas Marina circuit and leave with a smile.

Event of the season, this race at the edge of the desert promises to be grandiose at nightfall. There will of course be floodlights for a smooth transition between daylight and the somewhat more artificial light! As with the first event of the year in Australia, all counters will be reset to zero on a circuit that no driver knows. Alonso truly has a chance to shine, let the show begin.

Fernando, what are your feelings after a Brazilian Grand Prix that was very brief for you…

It was really a shame not to have been able to finish a lap because I think we could have scored points at Interlagos. I had a good start, unfortunately, when Sutil and Trulli collided, I was also hit by the Force India. It’s really frustrating because Interlagos is a circuit I really enjoy, and I think we could have performed well there.

Are you excited to race in Abu Dhabi for the first time?

« New challenges are always interesting and the Abu Dhabi circuit looks impressive. It will be a new experience for all the drivers on the grid and it will be important to maximize running during free practice sessions. We will need to learn the circuit and find an advantage as quickly as possible. From what I’ve seen, the Yas Marina facilities are impressive and this race will be great for the people of Abu Dhabi. We were there a few years ago for a roadshow and we know that Formula One fans are very enthusiastic in this region. »

This will be your last Grand Prix with Renault. Are you looking to complete this final race with the team on a positive note?

« Absolutely. I want to finish the season and my career with the Renault F1 Team with a great result. This race will be full of emotion. I have so many beautiful memories with this team and I will say goodbye to friends who are very dear to me. Renault is one of the great teams in Formula One and I look forward to competing with them on the circuits in the years to come. »
