Jean Todt, the new representative of the FIA – Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile – has unveiled his program for the upcoming Formula 1 seasons. The Frenchman, who succeeded Max Mosley last October, proposed two important points: an eco-friendly F1 and a more affordable F1.
Todt has appointed Gilles Simon as the Head of a working group aimed at proposing a greener Formula 1. In his speech, Todt also supports efforts to reduce costs. A Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA) should be developed soon before being able to ask more (or less) from the teams in the coming seasons: « In F1, some teams are sometimes blind and unaware of what is happening in the world. But F1 has indeed been hit by the financial crisis. F1 is too expensive, and my predecessor made great efforts to reduce the costs of participating in the championship even though some teams were reluctant. »
« However, I am sad to have seen Honda, BMW, Toyota, and Bridgestone leave. But when so much money is spent without results, the sentence is inevitable… even if it will allow new teams to arrive, » continues the former director of Scuderia Ferrari.
« To continue the efforts, other budget restriction measures will soon take place…
Todt will therefore continue the main policies led by Mosley, and a possible return of KERS is conceivable as early as 2011 but common to all teams.
