Red Bull also started the 2010 season as they finished 2009, in form. The energy drink team held their ground today for the first qualifying session of the season.
Vettel secured a superb pole position, starting 2010 with hopes of victory. Webber, for his part, is 6th with some mistakes in his lap.
Sebastian Vettel – 3rd and 1st:
« It’s a big surprise to have taken pole position. We didn’t know where we stood in terms of performance with the winter tests. Yesterday was particularly difficult for us with little running. The night was long for the mechanics but everyone did a great job. I knew the car was good and the qualifications went smoothly, up to getting pole. It’s great. »
Mark Webber – 5th and 6th:
« I did my worst lap of the weekend at the most crucial moment of the day… Everything was fine until turn 16, then afterwards I made mistakes. Seb [Vettel] did a great job to get the pole, and for my part, the car was definitely good enough to make it a one-two. It’s disappointing, but the race is long.
Christian Horner – Director:
« A great job was done today. It’s good to start the pole season. Sebastian [Vettel] made no mistakes in all three qualifications and his lap was perfect to get the pole. It’s a reward for all the work we’ve done this winter. Mark [Webber] had good times in Q1 and Q2 and then lost a bit of time in his fast lap in Q3. The important thing is that the car is working and he can progress in the race tomorrow. I’m sure we’ll be fast. »
