What is the starting point for developing a new range of tires?
PH: You must go through a logical process. Initially, it’s about defining a profile, which is the foundation. Then you work on rubber blends and constructions. After an extensive phase of modeling and computer analysis, we find the best theoretical solution and validate it through track tests. A vast number of parameters need to be considered, but we must establish a balance between performance, longevity, and driving comfort in a wide variety of conditions.
Will the tires of 2011 be very different from those of last year?
PH: The regulations are practically the same as last year to maintain technical stability. That being said, our tires have a distinctive Pirelli identity with different characteristics compared to the previous manufacturer. We aimed to produce a tire that would appeal to drivers and spectators to enhance the appreciation of Formula 1.
Is it complicated to work with 12 new teams?
PH: This is not a problem at all. But the difficulty lies in working with 12 different chassis, each with its own characteristics. Several championships are single-make formulas, which obviously offers a much simpler scenario. Our job is to get our tires to work optimally on all these cars.
The teams agreed to have an identical weight distribution. Did this make Pirelli’s task easier?
PH: This probably helped the teams themselves more than Pirelli, because it removes a variable for them. But it undoubtedly helps us too, even if the weight distribution is just one factor in the complex equation that makes the cars so different.
Can Pirelli tires add something to the show?
PH: It’s one of our priorities, keeping in mind that we first have to go through a learning curve. Gradually, we’ll be in a stronger position to influence the show. The future of F1 depends on its ability to be an exciting sport to watch, and we believe we can contribute to that. We’re looking to make the differences between the tires more noticeable to encourage interesting strategies. And of course, we have the option to adjust the quality of grip if that’s the general desire. We are open to all opinions and happy to offer various solutions to enhance the spectacle.
How does Pirelli envision the future of Formula 1?
PH: The future excites us because it is a fantastic opportunity for car manufacturers and producers to explore areas of technology that will ultimately benefit road users. We want to play an active role in the future development of the discipline and enhance the spectacle of F1. We are committed to working closely with all teams to offer the most suitable products for today’s market.
